The si te represented, is the entrance of a forest, near which flows a broad river. This picture belongs to a set of four, in the Gallery of the Louvre, which have been engraved by Etienne Baudet: we have seen the three others, nos. 517, 878, 883. Width, 8 feet 6 inches; height. 6 feet 8 inches. ICOLE FLAMANDE. ----- TENIEKS. CAB. PAETICUL UNE SORCIERE. Le principal merite des tableaux de Ten iers'consiste dans la verite avec laquelle il -ut rendre des scenes familieres et quelquefois triviales des habitaos de la Flandre, dans le siecle ou il vivait. Celui-ci: .'est point en rapport avec les habitudes de Tenlers, tout est d'imagination, et le peintre, en cessant d'imiter la nature, n'en a pas moins fait un ouvrage d'un grand merite. Le preuve en est que ce tableau a decore le cabinet du celebre peintre Josue Revnolds. Les figures hideuses et fantastiques qui fourmillent dans ce tableau, la bouillante fureur de Cerbere, contrastent tres-bien avec le calme parfait de la sorciere, qui entretient un commerce habituel dans l'enfer. On connait de ce precieux tableau, une belle gravure en mezzo-tinte, faite en 1786, par Richard Earlom. Larg.; haut., A SORCERESS.
